Bradford, John DiariesUS-HHS-2005-001

47 Depot Street, PO Box 177
Hardwick, Vt. 05843
Collection Title: John Bradford Diaries
Collection Dates: 1905-1962 (bulk 1938-1962)
Extent: 15 volumes
Name of Creator: John Bradford
Abstract: A collection of diaries kept over the course of the first half of the 20th century by a man who worked in the granite industry until it dried up. For a number of years he worked at a lot of jobs, then he eventually became the janitor at the local high school.
Preferred citation: John Bradford Diaries. Hardwick Historical Society, Hardwick, Vt. 05843
Biography: John J. Bradford was born in Cabot in 1874. His family moved to Walden in 1879.
In 1892 he went to work for G.A. Badger, who had an ice cutting and delivery
business in Mackville, and worked for him off and on for the next
six years.
Bradford worked as a granite cutter and represented the union at a
meeting in Montpelier in 1912. Hardwick’s granite industry fell off
greatly at the start of World War I, and Bradford had to find other
work. He took a logging job for Haskell Balch in November 1917, and
in January 1918 worked in some undefined capacity for Arthur Waterman.
In February 1918 he worked in a bobbin factory, and by April he worked
in a quarry on Buffalo Mountain. In 1920, he took a job at John Walsh’s
quarry on Buffalo Mountain.
In 1920, he bought a homestead next to his own in Mackville. In 1921,
he sold the house and retained 3 acres for his own use. In 1917, he had
had to sell some cows because he could not find pasture for them. He
immediately put cows on the new pasture. In April, 1921, he went
to work for P.A. Pike. In September, 1922, he was working at the Klondike
Quarry. In March, 1923, he went to work for George Bond. In July, 1924,
he was seriously injured while tearing down a building when a falling beam
hit him. In March, 1926, he went to work for Fletcher Granite, in the
Village. In April, 1929, he was boarding at Leonard Atkins, in Woodbury.
In December, 1931, he moved his family into the Village for the
winter. In January,1933, the newspaper referred to him as the
regular janitor at Hardwick Academy (HA). In May, 1933, he moved
from the Pierce Block on Main Street back to his home in Mackville.
In January 1935, he and his wife occupied the house of Dr. Crane
while Crane spent the winter in Florida. The Bradfords returned to
Mackville in May. That became their pattern – winter in the village
beginning in November, and the rest of the year in Mackville, begin
ning in May. In 1938, at the the HA&GS annual meeting he was
elected truant officer. In 1941, he was a Trustee of the Fairview Cemetery Commission.
Allen Davis, HA Class of '49, remembers that "Bradford did more
than sweep the floors and tend the furnace. He was a quiet authority
presence around the building, and because his "office" was next to
the men's room, he helped to contain the army of boys who arrived
during recess." Davis added "I remember was 1946 Red Sox vs Cardinals
[World Series] ( we were all Red Sox fans). All the games were played
during the day. One at a time a group of us would ask permission to
go to the men's room and then gather in Bradford's room where he had
the radio on to the ball game. On one occasion the Principal Chandler
Moser joined us for he was a fan too. Bradford would have been 70
years old."
Bradford was an active member of Modern Woodmen of America, the New
England Order of Protection, and on the Commission that oversaw the
Fairview Cemetery.
Bradford married Hattie Balch in August, 1901, and they had a
daughter, Ada. A devout Baptist, Bradford and his wife held prayer
meetings at his home, beginning about 1917 and continuing through
the 1930s. In July, 1951, John and Hattie celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary. She died in November, 1954; he in 1962.
Scope and Content: The collection consists entirely of diaries in which Bradford recorded the weather, work he did, people who came to visit, the comings and goings of his daughter, etc. Typically he’s not emotive, but he’s regular in what he reports and that tells a story across time.

Collection Dates: 1850-1970s; bulk 1898-1960s
Extent: 1 box; .75 cubic feet
Name of Creator: Allen Freeman Davis, 1931‐
Abstract: The Davis Papers contains a variety of ephemera from the Hardwick community. The material dates from the late 19th century through the middle of the 20th century. The collection also includes a substantial number of inventories from his father’s store.
Preferred citation:Allen F. Davis Papers. Hardwick Historical Society, Hardwick, Vt. 05843
Biography: Allen Freeman Davis was an American history professor and writer. He was born in Hardwick, Vt., January 9, 1931, the son of Harold Freeman (1894-1977) and Bernice Susan (Allen) Davis (1896-1951). His parents owned and ran the general store started by C.F. Davis, Harold’s father.
Davis received an AB from Dartmouth College in 1953, an MA from the University of Rochester in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army, 1954-1956, then married Roberta Hazel Green in 1956, with whom he had two sons. The marriage ended in divorce some years later. He completed a Ph.D. at the University Wisconsin in 1959.
He started his academic career as an Instructor of History at Wayne State University, Detroit, 1959-1960. He became an Assistant Professor of History at the University Missouri, Columbia, 1960-1963 and Associate Professor, 1963-1968. He was Professor of History at Temple University, Philadelphia, 1968-1999, and Professor Emeritus, since 1999. He was Visiting Professor of History at University Texas, Austin, 1983, University Amsterdam, 1986-1987. He served as the John Adams Chair and Director of the Center for Public History, 1987-1999.
He was the recipient the following rewards and honors: a Danforth Graduate fellowship, 1953-1959, an American Philosophical Society grant, 1962, ’65, a Friends of Literature award, 1970, an American Council Learned Societies senior fellowship, 1971-1972, the Christopher award, 1974; a National Endowment of the Humanities fellowship, 1975-1976, a Fulbright fellowship, 1986-1987, and the Carl Bode-Norman Holmes Pearson Prize, 1996. Davis is a former President of the American Studies Association (1989-1990). He created the Allen Davis Endowed Fellowship in Public History at Temple University.
In his own words: “I grew up during Depression and War and that had a great impact on my generation. I lived in a large Victorian house at South Main and Summer Streets across from the cemetery and in the shadow of Buffalo Mountain. It was my only house until I went to college. My father owned a general store on South Main Street at the top of Plank Hill. My grandfather, Charles F. Davis (1864-1951), purchased the store in 1902. My father graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1914. My mother graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1913 and the University of Vermont in 1917. She taught Latin and English at Hardwick Academy from 1918 to 1924. She also served on the Hardwick School Board for nearly thirty years. I had two sisters, Florence (1926-2020) and Marjorie (1934-1965). Like many of my friends in Hardwick my family had a grandmother living with us. In my case she was my mother’s mother, Lola Wylie Allen (1858-1940), and she died when I was nine. My grandfather and his second wife, Sarah Holton Davis (1867-1957), lived only a few houses away.
“I entered first grade in 1937 (there was no kindergarten in Hardwick) and for twelve years I went to school in the same building. We all walked home for dinner at noon ( there was no concept of lunch in Hardwick). I was in the fourth grade when the attack on Pearl Harbor catapulted the United States into the World War II. I was in the eighth graded when the war ended in Europe. In High School we had some good and some inadequate instructors as well as two great teachers. Leone Cobb and Chandler Mosher taught us how to write and inspired us to go to college. There were twenty-three in my graduating class in 1949, and twelve went to college. Because it was a small school there were opportunities to participate in a variety of activities. I played basketball, football, and baseball (but I never could hit a curve ball.) I sang in the glee club (though I could not sing,) I acted in plays (though I had no talent). I wrote for the year book and for the school newspaper.
“I spent a great deal of time in the Jeudevine Memorial Library and the Idle Hour Theater, and both places stimulated my imagination and influenced my dreams. In the library I hid out on the balcony and read whatever was on the shelves ‐ biography, fiction and history. I went to the theater at least once a week and usually more than once. Often there was a double feature as well as a cartoon, a serial, and a news reel. I also spent many hours in the “New Gym” which had been completed in 1940. I went there not only for basketball, but also for dances, lectures, graduation exercises, plays, and even movies. I also spent time at the United Church on South Main Street, not only for religious services, but also for church suppers and young peoples’ meetings that included lectures and folk dancing. The United Church was a liberal protestant church. The Catholic Church was across the street. There was tolerance, but little cooperation. My family was Congregational and Republican by conviction and habit. I outgrew both within a decade after I left town. Hardwick was a declining granite town while I was growing up. There was some conflict and prejudice, but there was also a real sense of community.
“I graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953, earned a Masters Degree in History from the University of Rochester in 1954 and a Ph.D. in History at the University of Wisconsin in 1959. I served two years in the Army, as most men of my generation did, but because of student deferments, the Korean War was over before I was drafted. I taught American Cultural History and American Studies in several American Universities and lectured widely in the United States, Europe, and Asia. I have written or edited more than a dozen books and many articles.
“I contribute regularly to The Hazen Road Dispatch, a publication of the Greensboro Historical Society, and the Hardwick Historical Society Journal. I live in Philadelphia, but I return each summer to the family camp on Caspian Lake built by my grandfather in 1923 on land purchased by my grandmother, Florence Haines Davis (1864-1923), in 1913. And I return each year to Hardwick.”

Stone, Frank H. Collection
US-HHS-2020-001
Hardwick Historical Society
47 Depot Street, PO Box 177
Hardwick, Vt. 05843
Collection Title: Frank H. Stone Collection
Collection Dates: 1907-1942
Extent: 1907-1944, Bulk, 1907-1918
Name of Creator: Frank H. Stone
Abstract: Frank Stone started his career in Hardwick as a draftsman for the Woodbury Granite Company in 1901. He left the granite industry in 1927 and became a coal dealer. The collection reflects those business activities.
Preferred citation:Frank H. Stone Collection. Hardwick Historical Society, Hardwick, Vt. 05843
Biography: Frank H. Stone was born in Leicester, Mass.
September 7, 1871, the son of James H. and Frances (Wilson) Stone.
He graduated from Worcester High School in Worcester, Massachusetts,
in 1893, and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Stone worked as a draftsman in Somerville, Mass., in 1900, and
moved to Hardwick, Vermont, in 1901, as a draftsman for the
Woodbury Granite Company. He became head of the drafting
department and an assistant to George H. Bickford, the General
Manager, serving to estimate the size, shape, and number of
stones for any planned building, as well as the cost of
production. Sometime between 1910 and 1914, he became the Plant
Manager; he served on the board of directors during the height
of the company’s prosperity.
Stone worked on the plans for, among others, the Pennsylvania
State Capitol (c.1903), the Wisconsin State Capitol (c. 1906),
the Cook County Court House and Chicago City Hall (c. 1908), and
the American Telephone and Telegraph Company building in New
York City (c. 1922). After retiring from the granite industry,
he went into the coal business in Hardwick and Waterbury. He ran
the Waterbury office and his wife ran the Hardwick office.
Stone married Anna Willey in October 1900. Shortly after, they
settled in Hardwick and eventually moved to a house on Spring
Street where they reared three daughters, including Dot Stone
Emanuel. The Stones built a cottage on Caspian Lake in 1916/17,
and it stayed in the family for more than 100 years. He was a
32nd degree Mason, a member of the Caspian Lake Lodge No. 87,
in Hardwick. In 1934, he and his wife bought a winter home in
Vero Beach, Florida. Stone died November 20, 1946, in
Charleston, S.C. after falling ill while traveling to Florida
for the winter.
Scope and Content: The collection’s contracts, working handbooks, and spattering of correspondence – some about projects he worked on between 1907 and 1918 – reflect his activity in the building granite industry. The ledger reflects his activity in the Hardwick branch of Stone’s coal business between 1934 and 1942.
System of arrangement: The collection has two series representing Stones work in the granite industry and the coal business. Materials in each series are arranged chronologically.
Removed from Collection: Removed Robert Emanuel’s gasoline rationing card c. 1944, to our vertical file labeled World War II – Ration books and a US Savings Bond issued to Rocata Camp Fire, 1918 to our vertical file labeled Organizations ‐ Rocata Campfire Girls.

- Custodial history: In July and August, 2020, the HHS received two separate collections of materials created by or related to Frank H. Stone. In July, Allen Davis, of Greensboro, brought us handbooks and other granite-related documents and automobile-related materials which he had received from Becky Arnold, also of Greensboro. The Arnolds owned the camp on the shores of Caspian Lake near the Stone family camp. Becky got the items through the Emanuel family, grandchildren of Frank Stone. In August, Reed Cherington, who also had a personal relationship with the Emanuels, brought in the items from the coal business. All materials had been in the family of Frank Emanuel, son of Robert S. Emanuel and grandson of Frank H. Stone.
